Cruise and ballistic missiles, from short-range rockets to accurate ballistic missiles, are gaining an increasingly central place in 21st century warfare. Many countries, mainly in the Middle East and Asia, now invest significant resources in building missile systems to accompany - and sometimes replace - the manned airstrike systems developed according to the commonly accepted military doctrines of the past century. This increasing threat affects the entire international community with as much bearing on issues of military defense capacities, as on the defense of civilian infrastructures and populations.
Anti-missile interception systems have much in common with air defense systems, but they also possess unique traits dictated by the high terminal velocity of missiles and rockets, the ability to fire in salvos, and - in the case of unconventional warheads - the need to completely destroy the warhead to avoid collateral damage. To meet these unique challenges, active defense systems must be innovative, utilizing a variety of state-of-the-art technologies, while developing and encouraging emerging technologies.
Israel faces one of the most severe missile and rocket threats in the world. It sustained a ballistic missile attack from Iraq in 1991, and has been exposed over the last 40 years to terrorist attacks with short range rockets on its borders and infrastructures, attacks which have recently expanded to the center of Israel. In response, some twenty years ago, Israel started to develop active defense capabilities; its scientific and engineering community gaining unique experience and know-how in active defense technologies making Israel one of the leading countries in this area.
The First Annual Israel Multinational Ballistic Missile Defense Conference and Exhibition is intended to offer directors, scientists, engineers and technicians, developing active defense systems in Israel and abroad, a podium to present their past projects, current achievements, and future plans. This conference is organized by IMDA - Israel Missile Defense Association, whose goal is to increase awareness of the importance of missile defense; ISAA - Israel Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the home of the aerospace community in Israel for more than 50 years; and Technologies Group, Israel's technology-related data center for the high-tech industry.
We are pleased to invite you to join us in May.
